Stock charts look complex, but a few basics tell you most of what a beginner needs: the trend, the range and the volume.

Start with the time frame. A one-day chart shows noise, while a one-year chart shows direction. Look for higher highs and higher lows in an uptrend, and the opposite in a downtrend.

Volume shows conviction: big moves on high volume tend to matter more than moves on quiet days.

Beginner Checklist

  • Pick a time frame that matches your goal
  • Mark the recent high and low
  • Compare price moves with volume
  • Never trade on a chart alone

Charts show what happened; your plan decides what you do next.
